The Bible has been the number one selling book of all time. It's history is rich and textured. For many, it is the Word of God, and many others contest that fact. Join us as we take a closer look at Christianity's most influential text in this two-part series of workshops and discussions.

About the event

Part 2: The Bible is a Sacred and Human Text

This topic will be engaged with the assistance of Rev. Dr. Mitzi Smith, who is currently J. Davison Philips Professor of New Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary.

Dr. Smith earned her B.A. in Theology from Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, MD; her M.A. in Black Studies from The Ohio State University; her M.Div. from Howard University School of Divinity; and her Ph.D. in Religion (New Testament and Early Christian Studies) from Harvard University in 2006. She is the first African American female to earn a Ph.D. in New Testament from Harvard.

Dr. Mitzi Smith is a distinguished scholar of New Testament engaged in some of today's most important discussions about womanist and African American biblical interpretation. Dr. Smith is passionate about biblical interpretation and continues the conversation outside the classroom through her many authored and edited books, articles, and multimedia productions.

Our time together with Dr. Smith will be in two movements:

  1. Review of a segment from Dr. Smith's podcast Beyond the Classroom.
  2. Q and A with Dr. Smith

We look forward to welcoming Dr. Smith to TFS family and engaging her as a conversation partner as we learn more about the Bible.
